Life in a Cottage Garden with Carol Klein, BBC 2.
At the beginning of the week I was left hungry by television’s offering. By Friday my appetite was satisfied by beautiful images. Well paced with delightful music ‘Life in a Cottage Garden’ was near perfection.
Like the year ahead, it was full of promise. Opening in Carol’s garden in the dead of winter we were teased with images of how it would develop later. Oh, the power of nature to remind us there will be an end to this vicious winter.
And I didn’t mind that her garden was the size of a small nursery, because gardening is clearly her passion and livelihood. The inclusion of Latin and common plant names must also please the serious gardener.
As an amateur I couldn’t catch everything, but that didn’t matter either. It’s provided me with something to aspire to. Preferable to being spoon fed Blue Peter style with demonstrations and trite commentary. Yet there was still plenty of take home value. I will certainly be planting up garlic on my balcony window.
I hope that next week’s programme will be as pleasurable. I’ll be looking forward to it.
